Description
The village of Kappel am Krappfeld is situated on a slight hill in the eastern center of the Krappfeld, a wide, relatively flat plain characterized by agricultural crops, which is also considered the granary of Carinthia. Historically significant is the 12th century Romanesque choir tower church with attached 13th century charnel house.
The current center of Kappel, or rather the open space between the church, elementary school and fire department, is currently an inhomogeneous area divided into many smaller components that lacks cohesion and generosity.
The new town square is designed as a 12 x 25 m area, situated somewhat away from the elementary school and the streets and oriented northeast-southwest in the longitudinal direction. This creates a generous field between the elementary school/kindergarten, fire department and church, which sets the three buildings in relation to each other.
In combination with the pavilion, which forms a permeable spatial boundary to the northeast, this creates a multifunctional playable square that offers many possible uses both in everyday life and at events.
